Kalax Flytesting Device, Pat.Pend
Fly tester background
Tuomo Petäjä-Suvanto has been an active fisherman for 27 years. Based on his experience and enthusiasm, the development of Kalax fly testing device began in 1998.
The idea to develop the first commercial fly tester came from noticing many of the fishermen making own l ures, testing the swimming of these in streams during the spring in Finland. Why not build a device simulating water stream, allowing testing already in the making of lures and not having to notice something that has to be improved, afterwards?
Tuomo then started building a testing model, finally reaching the point where the speed of the water flow became adjustable and it was possible to watch the lure from the side. As an experienced fly fisherman, Tuomo realized how interesting it was to follow flies (streamers and salmon flies) both from the side and underneath! Just that the device was too big.
Further product development efforts followed with the goal to gain a water flow speed of 1,5m/sec. fully adjustable. The water would have to flow straight in order to see if the fly overturns in underwater stream. The structure of the device, cost-effective enough for future serial production, was then to be carefully planned; tens of prototypes were produced.
Kalax fly tester is developed for individual flytyers, clubs, and shops and fly manufacturers to give all the more in fly fishing through new experiences with the tester, and proving that by learning with the help of this tutor you take your tying to a new level!
